Grout, whether it is used internally or externally is prone to a wide range of stains.           Proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve the pristine look of grout lines. At Spirit Sealers, we understand the importance of grout care and offer a range of sealing and cleaning products specifically designed for the stone and tile industry.

Why Grout Care Matters

The most commonly used grouts are cementitious grouts. They are porous, which means they are susceptible to absorbing stains. Without proper care, grout lines can become discoloured, stained, or even harbor harmful mould and mildew. Regular maintenance including sealing and cleaning is necessary to keep them looking clean and tidy.

The Importance of Grout Maintenance

Mould prevention

Due to their porosity, grout lines are ideal breeding grounds for mould and mildew. Regular cleaning and sealing help prevent mould growth, ensuring healthy air quality indoors.

Aesthetic appeal

Clean grout lines enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of tiled surfaces. Dirty grout detracts from the beauty of the tiles themselves.

Durability

Properly maintained grout lasts longer than neglected grout. Regular cleaning and sealing protect grout from wear and tear, extending its lifespan.

Choosing the right cleaning solutions

pH Neutral Cleaners

pH neutral cleaners such as Spirit Neutral Cleaner do not etch grout like acidic  cleaners. They effectively remove dirt without damaging the grout itself. They are great for maintenance of any sealed surface.

Non-abrasive scrubbers

Soft white scouring pads as found in the Spirit Doodle Bug and non-scratching nylon or natural bristled brushes should be used when cleaning grout lines. Hard scrubbing can cause damage to the grout surface and possibly even your tiles.

Effective grout sealing techniques

Application methods

Spirit Premium Grout Sealer is an easy-to-use aerosol can designed for the specific sealing of grout joints. Simply spray the grout joints and wipe off any excess sealer from the face of the tiles with a clean white rag. Alternatively, grout joints can be sealed using a can of Spirit Premium Seal and a thin brush. Choose the method best suited to your specific application.

Reapplication intervals

Depending on the area, resealing times will vary. Take a bathroom area for example, the shower base being a high traffic area will need resealing at least on an annual basis, whereas the outer bathroom area will last a lot longer.

Surface protection

Ensure that no excess sealant gets onto surrounding surfaces during application. Protect any areas that you don’t intend to seal.

Common mistakes when caring for grout

Overuse of strong chemicals

Strong chemicals break down and shorten the lifespan of a sealer, they can damage grout and may even damage your natural stone or tiles if used too frequently or incorrectly.

Not resealing

Sealing grout joints in the beginning is great, but as stated above, they will need resealing in future.

Tips for keeping grout lines pristine

  • Regular cleaning: Routine cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner like Spirit Neutral Cleaner helps prevent dirt buildup and maintains the cleanliness of grout lines.
  • Sealing: Applying a high-quality grout sealer like Premium Grout Sealer or Premium Seal creates a protective barrier against stains and moisture absorption, keeping your grout looking fresh.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Acidic or abrasive cleaners can damage grout over time. Opt for gentle cleaning solutions to preserve the integrity of the grout.
  • Grout Brush: Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub grout lines gently. Avoid harsh scrubbing that can erode the grout.
  • Ventilation: Proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens helps reduce moisture levels, preventing mould growth in grout lines.
  • Prompt Stain Removal: Address spills and stains immediately to prevent them from setting into the grout.

Spirit Sealers offers a range of sealing and cleaning products tailored to the unique needs of the stone and tile industry. Our products are formulated to provide effective protection against stains, mould, and discoloration while being safe for both your surfaces and the environment.

Is your bathroom and shower area in need of a makeover? Are tired old tiles and dirty grout joints bringing down the ambience of the space? The bathroom and shower areas are generally more prone to unsightly staining, needing more regular cleaning when compared to other areas of the house. The shower cubicle is considered a high-traffic area, it will need more regular maintenance than the rest of the bathroom. With the right approach and products, restoring old bathroom tiles can breathe new life into your bathroom. In this article, we are going to discuss five expert tips from Spirit Sealers experts to help you restore your bathroom tiles.

  • Assess the condition of your tiles

Before diving into any restoration project, it’s crucial to assess the current condition of your bathroom tiles. Are they loose, cracked, chipped, or just grimy from years of use and in need of a good clean? Understanding the extent of the damage will help you determine the best course of action. If your tiles are extensively damaged, you may need to consider repairs or even replacement. For minor wear and tear, cleaning will do the job.

  • How to clean your tiles

For common stains such as mould and mildew buildup, consider using a specialised organic stain remover such as Spirit Bright As https://www.spiritsealers.com/cleaners/spirit-bright-as/ Follow the instructions on the label or in the Technical Data Sheet carefully.                                                                                                                                            Scrub the face of the tiles gently with a soft white scouring pad using a Doodle Bug https://www.spiritsealers.com/cleaners/spirit-doodlebug/. 5 Tips to Restore Old Bathroom Tiles https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/5-tips-to-restore-old-bathroom-tiles/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/5-tips-to-restore-old-bathroom-tiles/#respond Mon, 08 Apr 2024 19:06:13 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2422

Is your bathroom in need of a makeover? Are tired, old tiles bringing down the ambience of the space? The bathroom floor is generally more prone to dirt, debris and fungus compared to other areas of the house. If this is the case with you, Fear not! With the right approach and products, restoring old bathroom tiles can breathe new life into your bathroom décor. In this article, we are going to discuss five expert tips from Spirit Sealers experts to help you restore your bathroom tiles.

Tips to Restore Old Bathroom Tiles

1. Assess the Condition of Your Tiles

Before diving into any restoration project, it’s crucial to assess the current condition of your bathroom tiles. Are they chipped, cracked, or just grimy from years of use? Understanding the extent of the damage will help you determine the best course of action. For minor wear and tear, a deep cleaning might be sufficient. However, if your tiles are extensively damaged, you may need to consider repairs or even replacement.

2. Deep Clean Your Tiles

A thorough cleaning is the first step in restoring old bathroom tiles. Start by removing any surface dirt and grime using a gentle tile cleaner or a mixture of warm water and mild detergent. For stubborn stains and mold buildup, consider using a specialized tile and grout cleaner such as Spirit Neutral Cleaner or Spirit Bright As Scrub the tiles gently with a soft-bristled brush, paying extra attention to grout lines. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow the tiles to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

*Recommended products: Spirit Neutral CleanerSpirit Bright As

3. Repair Any Damaged Areas

Once your tiles are clean and dry, inspect them for any chips, cracks, or loose tiles. Repairing these damaged areas is essential to ensure a seamless finish. For minor chips and cracks, you can use a quality tile repair kit to fill in the imperfections. For larger repairs or loose tiles, it may be necessary to remove and replace the affected tiles altogether. Make sure to use a waterproof adhesive to secure the tiles in place and allow sufficient drying time before grouting.

4. Refresh Grout Lines

Over time, grout lines can become discoloured and dingy, detracting from the overall appearance of your tiles. Refreshing the grout is a simple yet effective way to revive the look of your bathroom tiles. Start by removing any old grout using a grout saw or a rotary tool. Once the old grout has been removed, apply a new layer of grout using a grout float, making sure to fill in all the gaps evenly. Wipe away any excess grout with a damp sponge and allow the grout to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use Spirit Premium Grout Sealer to seal grout joints which is a solvent-based penetrating (impregnating) sealer designed specifically for grout joints.

*Recommended products: Spirit Premium Grout Sealer

5. Seal the Tiles for Protection

After cleaning, repairing, and refreshing your bathroom tiles, it’s essential to protect them from future damage. Sealing your tiles and grout will help prevent staining, moisture penetration, and mold growth, prolonging the lifespan of your newly restored tiles. Choose a high-quality tile sealer that is specifically formulated for bathroom use such as Spirit Premium Seal or Spirit Water-based Premium Seal. Apply the sealer evenly using a clean, lint-free cloth or applicator brush, making sure to cover the entire surface of the tiles and grout. Allow the sealer to dry completely before using the bathroom.

*Recommended products: Spirit Premium SealSpirit Water-based Premium Seal

Conclusion

Restoring old bathroom tiles doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With the right approach and products, you can transform your tired tiles into a stunning focal point of your bathroom. Remember to assess the condition of your tiles, deep clean them, repair any damage, refresh grout lines, and seal the tiles for long-lasting protection. The Art of Grout Care: Tips for Keeping Grout Lines Pristine https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/tips-for-keeping-grout-lines-clean/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/tips-for-keeping-grout-lines-clean/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2024 10:12:35 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2420

Grout, a mixture of cement, sand, and water, plays a crucial role in keeping tiles in place and maintaining the aesthetics of surfaces. However, grout is prone to staining, mold, and discoloration over time. Proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve the pristine look of grout lines. At Spirit Sealers, we understand the importance of grout care and offer a range of sealing and cleaning products specifically designed for the stone and tile industry.

Why Grout Care Matters

Grout is porous and susceptible to absorbing liquids, dirt, and grime. Without proper care, grout lines can become discolored, stained, or even harbor harmful mold and mildew. Regular maintenance not only enhances the appearance of your tiles but also prolongs their lifespan.

The Importance of Grout Maintenance

Mold Prevention

Grout lines are ideal breeding grounds for mold due to their porosity. Regular cleaning and sealing help prevent mold growth, ensuring healthy indoor air quality.

Neutral pH Cleaners

Neutral pH cleaners do not harm grout like acidic or alkaline cleaners. They effectively remove dirt without damaging the grout itself.

Non-abrasive Scrubbers

Soft brushes and non-scratching materials should be used when cleaning grout lines. Hard scrubbing can cause irreversible damage to the grout surface.

Natural Deodorizers

Natural deodorizing agents such as baking soda or vinegar can be added to neutral pH cleaners to eliminate odors caused by mold or bacteria.

Effective Grout Sealing Techniques

Application Methods

Spray bottles, rollers, or cloth applicators can all be used to apply grout sealant. Choose the method best suited to your specific application.

Reapplication Intervals

Most grout sealants need reapplying every six months to one year depending on usage and environmental factors. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for optimal results.

Surface Protection

Ensure that no excess sealant gets onto surrounding surfaces during application. Excess sealant may leave unsightly marks on other parts of the room.

Common Mistakes When Caring For Grout

Overuse Of Strong Chemicals

Strong chemicals can damage grout if used too frequently or incorrectly. Always follow product guidelines carefully.

Neglecting To Dry Thoroughly After Cleaning

Moisture trapped under dirty grout can lead to mold growth. Ensure that grout dries completely after each cleaning session.

Ignoring Cracks And Damage

Cracked or damaged grout allows water penetration which leads to further deterioration. Repair cracks promptly to maintain structural integrity.

Tips for Keeping Grout Lines Pristine

  1. Regular Cleaning: Routine cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner helps prevent dirt buildup and maintains the cleanliness of grout lines.
  2. Sealing: Applying a high-quality grout sealer creates a protective barrier against stains and moisture infiltration, keeping your grout looking fresh.
  3. Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Acidic or abrasive cleaners can damage grout over time. Opt for gentle cleaning solutions to preserve the integrity of the grout.
  4. Grout Brush: Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub grout lines gently. Avoid harsh scrubbing that can erode the grout.
  5. Ventilation: Proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens helps reduce moisture levels, preventing mold growth in grout lines.
  6. Prompt Stain Removal: Address spills and stains immediately to prevent them from setting into the grout.

Spirit Sealers Products for Grout Care

Spirit Sealers offers a range of sealing and cleaning products tailored to the unique needs of the stone and tile industry. Our products are formulated to provide effective protection against stains, mold, and discoloration while being safe for both your surfaces and the environment.

Sealing & Cleaning Terrazzo Tiles https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/sealing-and-cleaning-terrazzo-tiles/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/sealing-and-cleaning-terrazzo-tiles/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2023 09:53:22 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2313

Terrazzo tiles are renowned for their beauty, durability, and versatility, making them a popular choice for various spaces. To maintain their stunning appearance and ensure long-lasting performance, proper cleaning and sealing are essential. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of effectively cleaning and sealing your terrazzo tiles, allowing you to preserve their elegance and functionality for years to come.

Pre-Sealing

Terrazzo tiles used in specific environments, such as around saltwater pools or seaside residences, require extra protection. We recommend using Spirit Premium Consolidator for complete consolidation and protection. This consolidator can be applied through methods like spraying, brushing, microfiber applicator, or dip sealing to ensure thorough coverage. If you need more information on stone consolidation, don’t hesitate to reach out to Spirit Sealers for expert guidance.

In cases where Spirit Premium Consolidator is not used, Spirit Pre Seal serves as an excellent alternative. Applying Spirit Pre Seal before laying the tiles adds water resistance, preventing salts from building up within the stone. Additionally, it acts as a grout release, making it ideal for hard-to-grout surfaces and wall pointing.

Pre-Sealing Instructions

For maximum protection, consider pre-sealing at least the face and sides of the terrazzo tiles. For complete coverage, you can dip-seal all six sides of the terrazzo with Spirit Pre Seal. Remember, it’s crucial not to stack drying stones against each other without adequate airflow. Allow the tiles to breathe, and remove any excess sealer within 5 minutes for optimal results. If you have any uncertainties about pre-sealing, feel free to contact Spirit Sealers for expert advice.

Initial Cleaning and Grout Haze Removal

After laying, grouting, and washing the terrazzo tiles, some grout residue or haze may remain. To effectively remove it, follow the recommended cleaning steps. Avoid using acid-based cleaners, as they may cause etching on your terrazzo.

Cleaning Steps:
Sweep and Vacuum: Start by sweeping or vacuuming the area to remove loose debris and dirt from the terrazzo tiles.

Use Spirit Neutral Cleaner: Dilute 20 parts of clean water to 1 part Spirit Neutral Cleaner in a bucket and apply it to the area that needs cleaning. Use a broom to ensure an even distribution of the cleaning solution.

Allow Solution to Sit: Let the cleaning solution sit on the terrazzo for 2-3 minutes. If you notice it drying too quickly, add more cleaner to keep it wet. Clean the tiles in manageable sections.

Scrub with Spirit Doodlebug: Utilize a Spirit Doodlebug, a scouring pad set with a multi-directional head that can be attached to a broom handle, for easy cleaning in hard-to-reach areas.

Rinse and Remove Excess: Remove the cleaning solution with a dense mop and rinse the area thoroughly with clean water. If available, use a wet/dry vacuum for optimal results.

Avoid Acid-Based Cleaners: To prevent etching, refrain from using any acid-based cleaners on your terrazzo. If grout haze persists, a light dilution of Spirit HDC can be used, followed by a rinse with Spirit Neutral Cleaner.

Sealing Terrazzo Tiles

Once the terrazzo tiles are clean and dry, it’s time to proceed with the sealing process. We recommend using a breathable penetrating sealer for long-lasting protection without altering the natural appearance of the stone.

Sealing Steps:

Select the right sealer: For optimal results, choose Spirit Premium Seal as your sealing agent. Spirit NPS and Spirit Water Based Premium Seal are also suitable options.

Test First: Before applying the sealer to the entire surface, perform a test on a spare piece of terrazzo to ensure compatibility and the desired outcome.

Application: Use a Spirit Microfiber Applicator to apply the sealer evenly to the tiles. Apply two coats with approximately one hour of drying time between each coat. Follow the instructions on the sealer’s can or bottle closely for the best results.

Maintenance and Re-Sealing

To keep your terrazzo tiles looking their best and prolong the life of the sealer, proper maintenance is crucial.

Regularly clean the tiles with Spirit Neutral Cleaner to remove dirt and grime.

Periodically clean the tiles every 6-12 months, depending on traffic and wear, with Spirit HDC or Spirit Bright As.

Re-Sealing Considerations:

Weather conditions, harsh cleaning methods using high-pressure cleaners, and overuse of alkaline, acid, or solvent-based cleaners can affect the sealer’s performance and potentially damage the substrate.

Follow the appropriate Spirit Guide for your specific terrazzo substrate to ensure the best protection and longevity of the sealer.

Conclusion

By following these comprehensive steps for cleaning and sealing terrazzo tiles, you can maintain their natural beauty and enhance their durability. At Spirit Sealers, we take pride in providing premium-quality sealers and cleaning products for all your stone and tile surfaces. For personalized guidance or more information on our products, feel free to contact us. Invest in the care of your terrazzo tiles today and enjoy their elegance for many years to come.

How to seal & clean Travertine tiles https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/how-to-seal-clean-travertine-tiles/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/how-to-seal-clean-travertine-tiles/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2023 09:31:50 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2309

Travertine tiles are a popular choice for their timeless beauty and versatility. To ensure they maintain their luster and durability over time, proper cleaning and sealing are crucial. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the steps to effectively clean and seal your travertine tiles, allowing you to enjoy their natural elegance for years to come.

Pre-Sealing

When using travertine in specific environments, such as around saltwater pools or seaside residences, it is essential to take extra precautions. We recommend using Spirit Premium Consolidator for complete and total consolidation in these environments. Methods of application include spraying, brushing, microfiber applicator, and dip sealing. This consolidation process helps protect the tiles from the corrosive effects of saltwater. For further information on stone consolidation, please feel free to contact Spirit Sealers.

If Spirit Premium Consolidator is not used, Spirit Pre Seal is an excellent alternative for providing added water resistance to travertine tiles. This is particularly beneficial in shower cubicles, around swimming pools, or when using dark-coloured grout on light-coloured stone. Spirit Pre Seal acts as a grout release for hard-to-grout surfaces and wall pointing, making the grouting process much more manageable.

Pre-Sealing Instructions

For total coverage, you can dip-seal the travertine tiles, covering all six sides with Spirit Pre Seal. However, it’s crucial not to stack drying stones against each other without proper airflow. Allow the tiles to breathe, and remove any excess sealer within 5 minutes to ensure optimal results. If you have any doubts or questions about pre-sealing, don’t hesitate to reach out to Spirit Sealers for guidance.

Initial Cleaning and Grout Haze Removal

The first step in the sealing process is to clean the travertine tiles thoroughly and remove any grout haze that may have accumulated during installation. Travertine can be sensitive to acids, so it’s essential to avoid using acid-based cleaners for this purpose.

Cleaning Steps:

  1. Sweep and Vacuum: Begin by sweeping or vacuuming the area to remove loose debris and dirt from the tiles.
  2. Use Spirit Neutral Cleaner: Dilute 20 parts of clean water to 1 part of Spirit Neutral Cleaner in a bucket and apply it to the area that needs cleaning. Use a broom to ensure even distribution of the solution.
  3. Allow Solution to Sit: Let the cleaning solution sit on the tiles for 2-3 minutes. If you notice it drying too quickly, add more cleaner to keep it wet. Clean the tiles in manageable sections.
  4. Scrub with Spirit Doodlebug: Scrub the area with a Spirit Doodlebug, a scouring pad set with a multi-directional head that can easily reach hard-to-clean areas.
  5. Rinse and Remove Excess: Remove the cleaning solution with a dense mop and rinse the area thoroughly with clean water. If available, use a wet/dry vacuum for optimal results.
  6. Avoid Acid-Based Cleaners: It’s crucial not to use any acid-based cleaners on travertine tiles to prevent etching. If grout haze persists, a light dilution of Spirit HDC can be used, followed by a rinse with Spirit Neutral Cleaner.

Sealing Travertine Tiles

After the initial cleaning, the travertine tiles should be allowed to dry completely before proceeding with the sealing process. It is essential to choose a breathable penetrating sealer to ensure long-lasting protection without affecting the natural appearance of the stone.

Sealing Steps:

  1. Select the Right Sealer: We recommend using Spirit Premium Seal for the best results. Spirit NPS and Spirit Water-Based Premium Seal are also suitable options.
  2. Test First: Before applying the sealer to the entire surface, test it on a spare piece of travertine to ensure compatibility and the desired outcome.
  3. Application: Use a Spirit Microfiber Applicator to apply the sealer evenly to the tiles. Apply two coats with approximately one hour of drying time between each coat. Follow the instructions on the sealer’s can or bottle closely for best results.

Maintenance and Re-Sealing

Proper maintenance is essential to keep your travertine tiles looking their best and extend the life of the sealer.

Re-Sealing Considerations

  • Weather conditions, harsh cleaning methods using high-pressure cleaners, and overuse of alkaline, acid, or solvent-based cleaners can affect the sealer’s performance and potentially damage the substrate.
  • Follow the appropriate Spirit Guide for your specific travertine substrate to ensure the best protection and longevity of the sealer.

Conclusion

By following these comprehensive steps for cleaning and sealing travertine tiles, you can preserve their natural beauty and enhance their durability. At Spirit Sealers, we are committed to providing premium-quality sealers and cleaning products to protect and maintain your stone and tile surfaces. Cleaning and sealing Bluestone pavers https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/cleaning-and-sealing-bluestone-pavers/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/cleaning-and-sealing-bluestone-pavers/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2023 04:07:27 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2303

Bluestone pavers are a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor applications due to their durability and unique aesthetic appeal. However, to maintain their beauty and longevity, proper cleaning and sealing are essential. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of cleaning and sealing bluestone pavers to ensure they stand the test of time.

Pre-Sealing Bluestone Pavers

Before diving into the cleaning and sealing process, it’s essential to determine whether pre-sealing is necessary. Pre-sealing is recommended in certain circumstances, such as:

If bluestone pavers are installed in areas prone to moisture exposure, such as shower bases or around swimming pools, pre-sealing the face and sides can provide added water resistance.

Dark Grout on Light-Colored Stone

When using dark grout with light-colored bluestone, pre-sealing can prevent the grout from staining the stone surface.

High Porosity Level

Some bluestone varieties have a high porosity level, making them more susceptible to staining. Pre-sealing can act as a protective barrier.

Pre-Sealing Methods

Various methods, such as dipping, spraying, or using a microfiber applicator, can be employed to apply Spirit NPS, our recommended pre-sealer. Ensure to follow the product instructions carefully and contact Spirit Sealers for guidance if needed.

Initial Cleaning and Grout Haze Removal

After the bluestone pavers have been laid, grouted, and washed, a grout residue or haze may be left on the surface. Here’s how to remove it:

Allow the grout to harden sufficiently for 3-4 days before attempting to remove the grout haze. During this time, protect the area from potential damage by other trades.

Typically, acid-based cleaners are used for grout haze removal, but bluestone can be sensitive to acids, leading to etching. Instead, opt for Spirit Neutral Cleaner and follow these steps:

  • Sweep or vacuum the area to remove loose debris.
  • Dilute 20 parts clean water to 1 part Spirit Neutral Cleaner in a bucket and apply it to the affected area using a broom.
  • Let the solution sit for 2-3 minutes, keeping it wet by adding more cleaner if needed.
  • Scrub the area using a Spirit Doodlebug with a multi-directional head for effective cleaning.
  • Remove the solution with a dense mop and rinse the area with clean water.

As bluestone composition can vary based on its quarry source, test the stone’s sensitivity to acids before using any acidic product. Conduct the test on a spare piece of stone to avoid any damage.

Sealing Bluestone Pavers

Properly sealing bluestone is crucial to protect it from stains, water damage, and wear. Follow these steps for a successful sealing process:

Opt for a Breathable Penetrating Sealer

We recommend Spirit Premium Seal as the best choice for bluestone. Spirit NPS and Spirit Water Based Premium Seal are also suitable options.

Before sealing the entire surface, always test the sealer on a spare piece of stone to ensure compatibility and desired results.

Use a Spirit Microfiber Applicator to apply the sealer evenly. Two coats are required, allowing approximately one hour between each coat.

Maintenance of Bluestone Pavers

Proper maintenance is essential to extend the life of your bluestone pavers:

  • Regularly clean with Spirit Neutral Cleaner to remove dirt and grime.
  • Depending on traffic and wear, periodic cleaning with Spirit HDC or Spirit Bright As may be necessary every 6-12 months.

Re-Sealing Considerations

To ensure the long-term performance of the sealer, keep these factors in mind:

  • Weather conditions and harsh cleaning methods can impact the sealer’s effectiveness.
  • Follow the appropriate Spirit Guide for your specific substrate to achieve optimal protection.

Conclusion

Cleaning and sealing bluestone pavers is a crucial step in maintaining their beauty and durability. Properly executed pre-sealing, cleaning, and sealing routines will protect your bluestone investment and keep it looking stunning for years to come. At Spirit Sealers, we are committed to providing premium-quality sealers and supporting you in preserving the natural beauty of your stone and tile surfaces.

Terracotta is a beautiful and unique natural material that adds warmth and character to any space. To preserve its charm and protect it from stains and damage, proper sealing is essential. In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know about sealing terracotta, from pre-sealing to maintenance. Let’s dive in!

Pre-Sealing

Terracotta can be highly porous, making pre-sealing a valuable step to enhance its resilience and longevity. Spirit Pre Seal acts as a complement to the final seal, providing added water resistance. Additionally, it acts as a grout release, making grouting easier and resulting in higher-quality grout joints and a superior overall finish. Terracotta tiles can be dip-sealed, sprayed, or treated with a lambswool applicator. Only one coat is necessary, and Spirit Pre Seal cures within 24 hours.

Using Spirit Pre Seal as a Grout Release

Before grouting, you can apply a coat of Spirit Pre Seal to the face of your already laid terracotta. The following day, grouting your terracotta tiles becomes a breeze, thanks to the pre-sealing process.

Initial Cleaning and Grout Haze Removal

After the terracotta has been laid, grouted, and washed, a grout residue or haze may be left behind. To prepare the terracotta for sealing, follow these steps:

  1. Wait for Adequate Drying: Allow the grout to harden for 3-4 days before attempting to remove the grout haze. This waiting period ensures the grout has sufficiently dried.
  2. Protect the Area: During this timeframe, ensure the floor and walls are protected from any other work being done by other trades, as they may need to work over or near your freshly laid terracotta.
  3. Prepare Cleaning Solutions: Gather the necessary materials, including Spirit Phosphoric Acid, Spirit Neutral Cleaner, Spirit Doodlebug, a bucket, broom, and mop. Spirit Safe Acid can also be used for grout haze removal.
  4. Dilute and Apply the Solution: Dilute 10 parts clean water to 1 part Spirit Phosphoric Acid or Spirit Safe Acid in a bucket. Apply the solution to the area that needs cleaning, ensuring even distribution.
  5. Scrub the Area: Use a Spirit Doodlebug with a multi-directional head attached to a broom handle to scrub the surface in hard-to-reach areas.
  6. Rinse the Floor: Remove the solution with a dense mop and rinse the floor with Spirit Neutral Cleaner diluted with 20 parts clean water to 1 part cleaner. A wet/dry vacuum can efficiently remove the dirty water.
  7. Dry the Area: If necessary, rinse the area with clean water and let it dry completely before proceeding to the sealing stage.

Sealing

For the ultimate protection of terracotta, a breathable penetrating sealer is recommended. Conduct a test on a spare piece of tile before sealing the entire surface. For sealing terracotta, you have multiple options:

Sealing Process

  1. Prepare Materials: For sealing, gather your sealer, Spirit Microfibre Applicator, clean white rags, gloves, respirator, and a solvent suitable tray (for solvent-based sealers).
  2. Apply Two Coats: Apply two coats of the sealer, allowing approximately 1 hour of drying time between coats. Follow the directions on the product’s label closely for best results.

Maintenance & Re-Sealing

Terracotta can be cleaned regularly using Spirit Neutral Cleaner. If needed, the tiles can be cleaned periodically (every 6-12 months) depending on traffic and wear. For more thorough cleaning, Spirit HDC or Spirit Bright As can be used to remove tough stains and grime without harming the terracotta.

To ensure the ongoing effectiveness of the sealer, it’s crucial to re-seal as needed. Factors that influence the frequency of re-sealing include the level of traffic and the location of the terracotta surface. By following the guidelines provided in this guide and using Spirit Sealers’ premium quality products, you can ensure your terracotta surfaces remain protected and beautiful for years to come.

A guide to sealing concrete pavers https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/sealing-concrete-pavers/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/sealing-concrete-pavers/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 06:06:12 +0000 https://www.spiritsealers.com/?p=2273

Sealing concrete pavers is a vital step in maintaining their appearance and durability. At Spirit Sealers, we understand the importance of protecting your investment. Our range of sealing and cleaning products is specifically designed for the stone and tile industry, offering superior quality and performance.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of sealing concrete to enhance its durability and protect it from potential damage.

Pre-Sealing

Before sealing your concrete pavers, it’s essential to consider the environment in which they will be installed. In saltwater pools or harsh saltwater environments like seaside residences, we recommend using Spirit Premium Consolidator. This consolidator can be applied through various methods such as spraying, brushing, microfibre applicator, or dip sealing for complete consolidation. If Consolidator is not used, Spirit Pre Seal is an excellent alternative that provides added water resistance and prevents salt buildup within the pavers.

When working with shower cubicles, swimming pools, or using dark-colored grout on light-colored stone, it’s advisable to pre-seal at least the face and sides of the pavers. Complete coverage can be achieved by dip-sealing all six sides with Spirit Pre Seal. Remember to avoid stacking drying pavers against each other to allow proper air circulation and remove any excess sealer within 5 minutes.

Initial Cleaning and Grout Haze Removal

After laying, grouting, and washing the pavers, there may be residual grout haze that needs to be removed before sealing. It’s crucial to wait for the grout to harden sufficiently, typically 3-4 days, before attempting to remove the haze. During this time, it’s recommended to protect the floor and walls if other trades are still working in the area.

To effectively clean the pavers, you’ll need Spirit Neutral Cleaner, Spirit Doodlebug, a bucket, broom, mop, and clean water. Start by sweeping or vacuuming the area to remove any loose debris. Dilute 20 parts clean water to 1 part Spirit Neutral Cleaner and apply it to the cleaning area using a broom. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes, keeping it wet by adding more cleaner if needed. Scrub the area with a Spirit Doodlebug, which can be attached to a broom handle for convenience. Remove the solution with a dense mop and rinse the area with clean water. If necessary, a light dilution of Spirit HDC can be used for heavy grout haze, followed by a rinse with Spirit Neutral Cleaner. Avoid using acid-based cleaners unless specifically advised.

Sealing

Once the pavers are clean and dry, it’s time to apply the sealer. It’s recommended to use a breathable penetrating sealer that allows the pavers to release moisture. Before applying the sealer, it’s important to test it on a spare paver to ensure compatibility and desired results. For sealing concrete pavers, Spirit Premium Seal is the best choice, providing excellent protection. Spirit NPS and Spirit Water Based Premium Seal are also ideal options. If you have highly honed and polished finishes, Spirit Premium Seal and Spirit NPS are suitable choices. However, when using Spirit Colour Enhancer Pro, it’s crucial to test it beforehand as it may not react well with all concrete pavers. To apply the sealer, you’ll need a sealer, Spirit Microfibre Applicator, clean white rags, gloves, a respirator, and a solvent suitable tray for solvent-based sealers. Apply two coats of the sealer, allowing approximately 1 hour of drying time between coats. Follow the instructions on the product’s label carefully. Keep in mind that penetrating sealers will not prevent surface etching or scuffing, and extra care should be taken when using Spirit Colour Enhancer Pro to ensure excess sealer is properly removed.

Maintenance

Maintaining your sealed concrete pavers is essential to preserve their appearance and longevity. Regular cleaning with Spirit Neutral Cleaner is recommended to keep the pavers in pristine condition. It’s crucial to change the mop water every 10-20 square meters to prevent spreading dirt across the entire surface. For more thorough cleaning, periodic maintenance every 6-12 months may be necessary, depending on the level of traffic and wear. In such cases, Spirit HDC or Spirit Bright As can be used to remove stubborn stains and grime. Our specially formulated cleaners are designed to work effectively with concrete pavers, ensuring optimal results and minimizing the risk of damage.

Re-Sealing

Over time, weather conditions, high-pressure cleaners, and the use of alkaline, acid, or solvent-based cleaners can impact the performance of the sealer. It’s crucial to follow the appropriate Spirit Guide specific to your substrate to ensure the best protection for your sealed concrete pavers. The longevity of the sealer and its ability to provide adequate protection depend on four key factors:

  1. Using a premium quality sealer: At Spirit Sealers, all our sealers are of superior quality, ensuring excellent performance and durability.
  2. Proper application: Correct application techniques, including thorough cleaning and sufficient drying time, are essential for successful sealing. Avoid common mistakes such as sealing when it’s too hot or cold, failing to mop up excess sealer, or applying an inadequate amount.
  3. Location and traffic: Commercial areas with heavy foot traffic and frequent cleaning will require re-sealing more often than domestic areas. Outdoor spaces, high-traffic internal areas, and shower cubicles may also require more frequent re-sealing. If you’re unsure about the re-sealing frequency for your specific situation, don’t hesitate to contact Spirit Sealers for guidance.
  4. Floor maintenance: Regular cleaning with suitable cleaners is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the sealer. Using improper cleaners can break down the sealer prematurely and potentially damage the pavers. Our recommended cleaners are specially formulated for the stone and tile industry, ensuring safe and effective maintenance of your concrete pavers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, sealing concrete pavers is a critical step in protecting and enhancing their beauty and longevity. By following the guidelines and utilizing Spirit Sealers’ high-quality products, you can ensure the optimal performance and durability of your concrete pavers. Whether you’re working in a residential or commercial setting, our sealing and cleaning solutions are designed to meet your needs and provide long-lasting results. Remember, a well-maintained and properly sealed surface not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your pavers but also protects them from stains, damage, and the effects of harsh environmental conditions. Trust Spirit Sealers for all your concrete paver sealing needs, and enjoy beautiful and resilient surfaces for years to come.

Weather Conditions: Harsh weather conditions can affect the performance of the sealer. Extreme heat or cold may require more frequent re-sealing.

Cleaning Methods: Avoid using high-pressure cleaners or alkaline, acid, or solvent-based cleaners excessively. These cleaning methods can deteriorate the sealer and potentially damage the limestone substrate.

Traffic and Usage: High-traffic areas, such as commercial spaces or shower cubicles, may require more frequent re-sealing compared to domestic areas. Assess the usage and contact Spirit Sealers for expert advice on re-sealing intervals.

Proper Maintenance: Regularly clean the tiles with appropriate cleaners formulated for limestone to maintain the integrity of the sealer.

By following these guidelines and considering the factors mentioned, you can ensure the longevity and protection of your sealed limestone tiles.

Conclusion

Sealing limestone tiles is a critical step in preserving their beauty and durability. At Spirit Sealers, we offer a range of premium sealing products designed specifically for the stone and tile industry. Through proper pre-sealing, initial cleaning and grout haze removal, meticulous sealing application, and regular maintenance, you can enjoy the timeless elegance of your limestone tiles for years to come. Importance of sealing natural stone https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/importance-of-sealing-natural-stone/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/importance-of-sealing-natural-stone/#respond Thu, 28 Jul 2016 03:01:23 +0000 http://johncabrejas.com/testlink/?p=303

Natural stone is porous, which means it has interconnected capillaries through which liquids and gases can move. In fact, porous materials act like a hard sponge and actually suck in liquids over time, along with any dissolved salts and other minerals or contaminants (stains). More porous stone, such as sandstone will absorb liquids relatively quickly, while denser volcanic stones such as basalt are significantly less porous and may take longer to absorb oils and water-based liquids.

Natural stone should be protected against sub-surface staining, everyday dirt and spills; this can be done by sealing natural stone in 1 of 2 ways, a penetrating or topical sealer.

Topical sealers can alter the surface texture and finish, as well as build up on the surface creating a layer that is less durable than the stone. Penetrating (impregnating) sealers are carried into the stone by either solvent or water. The carrier then dissipates bonding the sealer resins with the stone. This process doesn’t alter the slip resistance or natural look of the stone.

The deposited resins then creates an oleophobic (oil-repelling) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) barrier which prevents sub surface staining. These products are considered “breathable,” meaning they allow for vapor transmission. Spirit Water-Based Premium Seal is on the cutting edge of this type of technology and is the perfect product for both DIY applications & commercial.

Pre-Sealing

Pre-sealing is a term used to describe sealing the tile or stone prior to laying. The benefit of this is that is reduces the porosity of the tile/stone and works as a grout release. However the main reason is to prevent the possibility of water marking. Water marking is reverse staining that occurs when a piece of stone is exposed to water and chemicals generally associated with high alkaline cements or other fixing materials.

This moisture is absorbed into the dry stone which can add minerals and dissolves existing  minerals in the stone. As this moisture dissolves and migrates through the stone then works its way to the surface to dry, the minerals are unevenly left behind and almost always alters the colour of the stone.

The problem with that is that the contaminates show a much darker colour that the balance of the stone and a resulting stain remains and can be impossible to remove through cleaning efforts. This stain is often on the edge of the stone where the grouting occurs, and the mark can surround the tile and look like picture framing.

Another form of this type of staining is where areas of the stone will have a blotchy effect at any location on the tile. The same effect but random through out the tile. The pictures below show a few examples of water marking.

The first picture has staining from moisture form the glue, this could’ve been prevented by pre-sealing the back of the tiles. It would be fair to note that up to the present, there is no known method for removing this type of marking. It is also fair to note that the use of Spirit Pre-Seal will prevent this from occurring.

Maintenance is the key

Once a natural stone has been sealed, maintaining the finish is very important, regular cleaning will allow you to keep the floor looking new. Sweeping and vacuuming the floor should be done as often as possible, this will help remove loose debris and reduce the amount of soil settling in the grout joints.

A wet mop should be used afterwards to remove the rest of the soil, it is very important that a ph neutral detergent such as Spirit Neutral Cleaner should be added to the mopping liquid. Acidic and strong alkaline cleaners should not be used on regular basis as these types of cleaners can damage the sealer and the natural stone.

Heavy traffic areas will need a scrub on a more regular basis with either a nylon scouring pad or a bristled brush depending on the finish of the surface.

Newly Installed Tiles

Properly removing excess grout smear left from the tiling is one of the most important things to do, if not removed completely it can make maintaining your tiles a nearly impossible task. Acid cleaners are designed to remove stubborn grout residues, however when used incorrectly they can damage the tile surface.

Spirit Marble & Tile Care are experts in stone & tile care, they can assist you on which cleaners are appropriate for your particular situation. Some natural stones are acid sensitive, i.e. Marble, Limestone, Travertine and other calcium based stones. If an acidic cleaner cannot be used, a good quality detergent such as Spirit Neutral Cleaner will do the job.

When cleaning acid sensitive stones it is important that you remove all the grout smear between 3-5 days from grouting, this allows enough time for the grout to cure in the joints but still be easily removed from the tiled surface. If the grout smear is left on for to long it can bond to the stone and may need to be removed by regrinding the surface. When using acid cleaners it is always a good idea to rinse thoroughly and neutralize the tiles so that all the acid residues are removed.

Clean between the lines

Grout joints can be a major problem as they are recessed, porous and textured. When you’re mopping, the combination of friction from the mop and the wetting agents from the detergent loosen the soil from the tiles and send them into the grout joints which absorb the dirty water, this will build up and become unsightly.

To help with this problem Spirit make easy to use sealers to reduce the absorption and assist with this problem, this is also very important in wet areas where mold and mildew occurs. Using bleach type products regularly is not ideal, although effective, these products are bad for your health, grout and the environment. By sealing and maintaining the joints, you will reduce the use of harsh expensive cleaning products and allow your grout to always look clean and uniform.

Spirit Marble & Tile Care

Our goal is to provide as many home users and professionals high quality products that assist them in protecting their valuable tile and stone assets, reduce cleaning time and reduce the need for harsh cleaning chemicals being used and entering our environment. At the same time educating the industry to prevent tiles and stone from being damaged through incorrect laying procedures and incorrect cleaning products being used.

Our website provides valuable information to the public regarding care & maintenance and correct cleaning methods. The website also provides key product information to ensure the optimal application and performance of all Spirit’s products.

How long do Penetrating (impregnating) sealers really last? https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/how-long-do-penetrating-impregnating-sealers-really-last/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/how-long-do-penetrating-impregnating-sealers-really-last/#respond Thu, 28 Jul 2016 02:56:51 +0000 http://johncabrejas.com/testlink/?p=297

The purpose of using a penetrating sealer is to allow the substrate to be stain free and to remain looking as new as possible through correct maintenance procedures; they can also assist in reducing freeze thaw issues and salt damage. To achieve this we believe that it is important that the sealer is working at its highest level possible.

The life span of the sealer can be greatly altered based on a number of variables such as;

  • Type of sealer used
  • UV exposure and intensity
  • Frequency of cleaning
  • Levels of Salt and Chlorine exposure
  • Type of substrate, finish, porosity
  • Substrates hardness, surface friction and wear
  • Cleaning chemicals, frequency and type of cleaning method used
  • Surface preparation prior to sealer application
  • Amount of sealer used and application method
  • Surface and air temperatures etc

It is not ideal to allow a sealer to break down to a level that it cannot give the assistance needed. All sealers break down gradually; and as such they do not have a definable overall life span.  Unless they remain in the substrate at a high level of say 80% they will cease to perform satisfactorily for the situation. We believe that maintaining the surface through regular cleaning with a ph neutral detergent and occasionally using an alkaline detergent for heavy built up areas, the sealer will achieve what is required to keep the surface maintainable for up to 5 years without reapplication and should then be reviewed to determine whether another coat is required. A top up coat is easily done by cleaning the surface thoroughly and applying another coat, there is no stripping required.

No sealer is “bullet proof” or completely “stain proof”, when considering the wide range of substrates and variables. Sealers are designed to give you a reaction time; all sealers perform differently against a wide variety of staining materials. Some penetrate very deep to help assist in protection against salt damage however they usually give less surface protection against oil & food staining, this is because the resins with extremely small molecules (nano) are generally modified silicones (silanes/siloxanes) that do not have a high resistance to oils, also the resin is spread deeper throughout the substrate so the is less to protect in the first 1-2mm where needed for stain resistance. Others give excellent protection against oil & food staining but fail to give true protection against salt damage.

Selecting the right sealer for your situation

It is very important to choose the correct sealer for your situation, in most cases deep penetration (silane / siloxane based) sealers are not necessary and may be the wrong choice as maximum stain resistance is a much more needed option. Fluoro based sealers give the highest level of stain resistance with a much larger reaction time for a greater range of stains. However they generally do not penetrate deep enough to give a true level of salt resistance. Spirit is able to combine these resins to allow good penetration and durability as well as excellent stain resistance. Most of the sealer will bond and become a permanent part of the stone, however it is important to understand to achieve long term stain resistance reapplication is in most cases necessary because the sealer in the first 1mm will be attacked by a number of elements and may not give the full protection against oils based stains. The most important thing to understand without sealers it can be nearly impossible to protect your investment.

When using Spirit Sealers you not only get an excellent product, you also have access to our Stone Care Support Network and our highly trained professionals can help with creating the ideal maintenance system for your specific situation. At Spirit we believe that natural stone is a beautiful thing and it is important to understand your stone and maintaining it correctly is just as important as sealing it, they must work together to allow an easily livable floor. So when purchasing a sealer you should always use a trusted well known company that can give you real customer support.

Blue stone – What is it really? https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/blue-stone-what-is-it-really/ https://www.spiritsealers.com/articles/blue-stone-what-is-it-really/#respond Thu, 28 Jul 2016 02:50:12 +0000 http://johncabrejas.com/testlink/?p=291

Active basaltBluestone is rapidly growing in popularity, with this there is great confusion surrounding what Bluestone actually is. Bluestone is not a geological term, it does not fall under any one category such; Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic. This is because it currently represents over 20 different rock types.

For instance:

In the U.S. and Canada it is generally a type of Sandstone which is deep blue in colour, but in some parts of the US & Belgium it is a form of Limestone that has formed in deeper water and exposed to less light the stone eventually fades from a deep blue to a light grey after prolonged exposure to the sun.

In Australia there are two types, one commonly known as Victorian Bluestone which is a form of Basalt. Basalt is an igneous rock made up mainly of feldspar; it is usually grey to black and fine-grained due to rapid cooling of lava at the surface of a planet. In South Australia it is known as a form of Slate. Slate is a metamorphic rock which is mainly made up of quartz and is usually pale grey or beige in colour, it should be noted that it is much less durable than the Victorian Bluestone.

Chinese Bluestone is commonly a grey Limestone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that largely made up of minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Limestone is very porous and highly reactive to acid.

There are many types of Bluestone and they all need to be treated and cared for differently, they vary from very hard, durable and dense to very soft and porous. To help identify the type of Bluestone you have our intend on using it is important that you get as much information about the stone from the supplier as possible, information such as; place of origin (location of quarry), type of stone, porosity, any special laying procedures (pre-sealing prior to laying), whether it is acid sensitive etc. This is the best way to make sure you end up using the correct cleaning & sealing products, unfortunately the is no magic chemical that can fix or prevent any situation with stone, so it is important that you use the right chemical for the correct situation. Spirit Marble & Tile Care are experts on all natural stone & tile situations and any questions you  have will be answer professional by one of our experienced applicators over the phone or via email.

Marble is a fantastic stone that is commonly misunderstood and often misused. It is often picked for its unique look and variety of colors; however its suitability for the desired application is more often overlooked. Being aware of its natural characteristics will give you a better understanding of its suitability. The following explains the ins and outs with what you need to know when considering Marble.

Marble is a metamorphosed Limestone composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals. Through its transformation from Limestone to Marble it has become much denser and harder than in its previous state. Because of this it has a lower porosity and a higher level of natural stain resistance then Limestone which allows it to be taken to a much higher polish; this also makes it more suitable for a wider range of applications. Marble is widely desired because of its variety of colors and unique crystal veins. It can have a wide variety of finishes such as; polished, honed, tumbled, sandblasted etc.

Etching

Etching occurs in all calcium carbonate stone such as: Marble, Limestone & Travertine. A etch is a dull mark on the stone that look unsightly and cannot be removed by cleaning. Etch marks on Marble are caused by acidic or strong alkaline liquids coming into contact with your stone. The acid eats the calcium carbonate and other minerals from the stones surface which can create a dull textured surface on the stone. The stronger the acid the faster it will react with the stones surface. Most food and drink items in the kitchen are acidic, and many household cleaning products can etch the finish of your stone. The higher the polish of the stone the more likely you are going to see etching, and the dark stones will etch to a much lighter color. Etches can be put into 2 categories minor and major:

A minor etch is a dull mark that is only seen in the reflection and cannot be felt.

A major etch is a dull mark that can be seen in the reflection and from above, it can also feel slightly rougher than the surrounding parts of the Marble.

To the right is a picture of three different types of Polished Marble, we picked five common household acidic ingredients for the experiment. The five products (red wine, tomato sauce, instant coffee, soft drink, lemon juice), were dripped on to the tiles and allowed to stand for approximately 30 seconds, then cleaned off using a neutral detergent and allowed to dry.

The conclusion was that all five products etched the surface in as little as 30 seconds. The soft drink and coffee only created a minor etch which could not be felt; while the other three created a major etch which could be difficult to polish out using powders. The etch marks easily stood out on the black Marble; however on the lighter color Marble they were only visible through reflection.

Scratching

Scratches tend to standout much more on highly polished Marble; however can still be seen on a honed finish. Scratches are much more noticeable on dark colored Marbles as the scratches become the color of the underside of the tile, which is almost always much lighter. Precautions to minimize surface friction such as the use of door mats should be used whenever possible. Minor scratches from foot traffic can look similar to the “spider webs” on weathered black car paint. Major scratches can often be identified both visually and by feel, you should be able to feel the scratch with you finger nail.

Yellow / Brown staining in white Marble

Marble is composed of carbonate minerals, mostly calcite and dolomite. However many white Marbles contain small amounts of iron and magnesium, if the marble is exposed to copious amounts of water these natural mineral deposits can rust which can appear as a yellow or brown looking stain.

Repairing Marble

Repairing minor etches and minor scratches can be polished out using Marble polishing powders, crèmes or diamond pads. This can be a tricky process and is usual only done by a professional stone mason or experience tradesman. Repairing a major etch or major scratch usually needs to be polished out by grinding the stone with diamond discs, this process can be expensive and should only be done by an experienced stone mason.

Suitability for Kitchen Countertops

Placement of the stone is important. If used in the wrong application is can be nearly impossible or very expensive to maintain. If Marble is going to be used as a kitchen countertop then it is inevitable that etching will regularly occur, a low sheen honed surface using a light colored Marble would be an ideal surface if Marble is intended on being used as a countertop. This surface will be smooth and if sealed with a premium grade penetrating sealer it will be easy to clean, with a low sheen surface etching will be less noticeable and easier to fix. It is always a good ideal to discuss Marble suitability with a stone expert prior to installing it; this will ensure that you will enjoy the natural characteristics of the stone.

Sealing Marble (penetrating)

Marble can benefit greatly from sealing with a premium grade penetrating (impregnating) sealer. In most instances Marble does not require to be sealed prior to installation; however it is always recommended inquiring from the company you purchased the stone from. Pre-Sealing can be used to prevent the Marble from any irreversible damage during the laying process. Sealing the stone and grout after installation can be very beneficial; premium grade penetrating (impregnating) sealers will provide a maintainable surface and greatly reduce the chances of staining. In wet areas sealing is very important to assist in the prevention of mould and mildew building up by reducing the porosity of the stone and grout.

Sealing Marble (coating)

Surface coatings for Marble usually are forms of acrylic, urethane or waxes. These are all very different, waxes are not very resistant to cleaning chemicals or UV and breakdown in a very short time. Acrylics create a plastic film on the surface and are more durable than waxes but still require frequent reapplication. Urethanes are extremely durable however are in most cases not recommended to be used on stone as they are very difficult to remove. All surface coatings will greatly reduce the ability for the stone to breathe, alter the slip resistance and appearance of the Marble. It is always recommend that you consult with an expert prior to determine whether a coating is suitable for you situation.

Sealer Limitations

Etching occurs when acidic or high alkaline liquids come in direct contact with the stone. Penetrating (impregnating) sealers sit below the surface; they coat the pores to protect the stone from absorbing stains while still allowing the stone to breathe. They do not stop liquids from coming in direct contact with the stone. Surface coatings sit on the stones surface which will protect the stone from coming in direct contact with the liquids, by forming a physical barrier on the stones surface it will stop both etching and staining. However surface coatings are not always suitable as they change the appearance of the stone, alter the slip resistance and they clog the pores which reduce the stones ability to breathe.

Cleaning Marble

It is very important to clean Marble regularly; water alone is not usually sufficient enough, if it is left to build up with heavy soils and soap scum it can be nearly impossible to recover without using harsh chemicals. Marble is very sensitive to chemicals and only ph neutral cleaners should be used on polished surfaces. Ph neutral cleaners are ideal for the maintenance of the stone, if sealed and maintained there should be no need to use any other type of cleaner. If the stone is externally it should have a honed or textured finish, a polished finish will not withstand weathering. Marble used externally may need to be cleaned occasionally with an alkaline cleaner be remove heavy soil build ups, this will not harm the stone or sealer if diluted correctly. Acidic cleaners should NEVER be used on Marble unless you are attempting to create a particular finish such as: a non-slip finish or a desired look.

In Closing…

Marble is a truly unique material that has been used in the building industry throughout history. Every tile is unique and through different fabrication methods there are a wide variety of finishes. One of the beneficial things about it is that you can grind the stone to a new surface many times to achieve a new or different finish. Marble may not be for everyone or every situation, but if you accept its natural characteristics, you will appreciate its truly unique beauty.
